These are Size "C" batteries- the smaller of the two "short fat" battery types.

Alkaline batteries are much longer lasting than zinc-chloride/zinc-carbon ones (those are cheap, but they`re also old-fashioned and very low-powered by today`s standards). Alkaline batteries are a great choice for battery torches and the like.
